"Life as we know it would not be possible without the Internet and by nature this infrastructure is decentrally operated. This is key for the Internet's resilience, but also implies that there is neither a plan of its structure nor on its further development. In my research, I investigate Internet protocols, i.e., rules of how communication systems communicate with each other, and survey the status quo of the Internet empirically in measurement experiments. Therefore, I develop and validate novel measurement methods, run large-scale measurement experiments, and analyse the collected data. The results allow to conclude, among others, centralization of the Internet or generally its security. With the ongoing digitalization, I also investigate the mutual dependencies of the Internet and other critical infrastructures like the power grid." (Johanna Ullrich)
