Every cell type is characterized by a specific gene expression signature: only some genes are active while others are repressed. Disturbing the cell type-specific gene expression can have devastating effects and often lead to diseases. The key to cell type-specific regulation are regulatory sequences often located far away from the gene they are controlling. In the project GENE-TUNE, the group led by Christa Buecker will use a novel bottom-up approach to build regulatory landscapes and systematically test individuals and combinations of regulatory sequences and elucidate how gene expression is controlled from a distance.
